Spring/Summer 2001
Here are the winning poems from Mac's Spring/Summer 2001 Poetry Contest! "Dogs in the Kitchen" was a topic that struck a chord (or a nerve) with many of the folks who submitted poems about their dog's eating habits, eating preferences, begging skills, counter cruising, drooling expertise....Just reading your work made our canine judges hungry and unable to concentrate. But we finally put all the snacks and edible diversions away and focused on evaluating the many wonderful poems sent in. Here's the pick of the litter. We hope you enjoy these pieces as much as we did!

My Favorite Room
by Mary Kiger
The kitchen, oh yes, my favorite room,
That's where all those great aromas loom.
Is that chicken, fish, or steak?
I'm not sure what I just ate!!
My mom calls me a kitchen bum,
'Cause I sit under the table and wait for a crumb.
I put my head up on the table,
And steal a lick of whatever I'm able.
Over in the corner is a little can,
Mom puts stuff there, even scrapes a pan.
I tip it over and drag stuff out,
And end up with coffee grounds all over my snout.
Hey! What was that you drropped on the floor?
It sure was good. Give me MORE!!MORE!!MORE!!

I Know She Sees Me
by Jean Sabia
I know she sees me sitting here
my pretty face with an intense stare
I know she'll set a place for me
next to her is where I'll be
She's cooking things that smell so great
This can't be my kibble on this plate
She eats her dinner and doesn't look up
for just one taste I'd give her my toy duck
She treats me great
takes me for walks
pets my furry face
smiles when she talks
I know she loves me
I have no doubt
but when she serves dinner
I feel so left out

Spencer's Point of View
by Nicole Larson
i am a dog who likes to eat i like to eat cooked chicken meat
i like to eat raw carrot peels i like to eat lemon fish meals
i also like my apple chunks they help me to have healthy guts
i like my fruits and veggies too they help me to feel just like new
if i keep eating just like this I will grow up to be very fit
i will not have wrinkly toes i will not have a scroungy nose
i will be as healthy as I can be my name is spencer and that is me
the kitchen is where I like to be
