Winter/Spring 2000
Here are the winning poems from Mac's Winter/Spring 2000 Poetry Contest! Mac delegated most of the judging to the younger dogs this time. Because his idea of a good time is to bask in the sun with a bowl of ice cubes nearby, Mac decided that Maynard and Harry were better versed in dog games than he--and they pounced on the opportunity.
Mac is dedicating this contest to the late Gypsy Rose Lee, the sweet and beautiful Malamute next door who died on July 31 of thyroid cancer. Gypsy was a temptress and a tease who used to sneak over and do a little dance on the deck to try get the boys all excited. It usually worked -- and served as a prelude to some fast-paced chases through the woods. (We miss you Gypsy!)
But enough about our dogs! Here's the pick of the litter from this contest:

Max's Prayer
by Chris Dewey
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord the lizards keep
Showin' up inside my house
'Cause they're more fun than any mouse!
The squirrels down here are small and fast,
And chasing egrets is a BLAST,
And if you look beneath the rugs,
You're sure to find Palmetto Bugs!
For now, I'll rest upon these pillows,
And dream of chasing Armadillos!!

Puppy Swirls
by Carol Truman
Pouncing, bouncing
bounding, growling.
Tooth and nail
nose to tail.
Puppy fury
wiggle, worry.
Chewy, squeeky
getting cheeky.
Bobbing, weaving
toys retrieving.
Hustle, tussle
building muscle.
Growling, scowling
sometimes howling.
Yelping, yawning
licking, fawning.
Whirling, curling
sleep unfurling.
Whimper, twitching
puppy snoring.
Peaceful, dreaming
until morning.

Emma's Dilemma
by Kate Borodzik
She sits beneath the apple tree
Too obsessed to come to me
Her eyes are steady, her sit is straight
She'll not come through the garden gate
It's the apples that have caught her eye
To call her in is not worth the try
I watch her think the process through
I know she knows just what to do
She circles round and back again
To find the branch that just might bend
And then with all her grace and might
It seems as if her feet take flight
She lands and looks as if to say
"I suppose YOU have a better way"
There's another leap and then for real
A shiny apple she does steal
Her apple game, it warms my heart
To love this dog that is so smart
